Learning and reading among the teens
Friday, June 10, 2011
The National Endowment for the Arts released a report saying that American teenagers and young adults are reading less for pleasure. The study came out as education efforts to address reading scores remained flat over the years.
Children emulate the habits of their parents’ hectic work and lifestyles. I say witnessing is habit forming and value forming for the kids. Few children nowadays see their parents sitting down and reading a book. Sustained reading is really a thing of the past with all the technology and free games downloads in this competitive world and environment of electronic media.
The new culture of instant gratification from a chance to win in seconds on computer games as well as instant messaging has denied teens vocabulary and sentence structure building skills including motivation for intellectual reading. Technology definitely has an impact on social and reading skills of both young ones and adults worldwide. Education needs to be more innovative in competing with these electronic gadgets and fun ideas for constant reinforcement over time.
